Oh Canada!

Ms Scott's class have been researching Canada as part of their social studies unit.  Working in small groups students used their research and created a book in the app Book Creator.

There are three links for each book.  The first is the epub version for reading on a digital device.  The second link is for the PDF version.  The third link is a movie of the book with the students' voices reading the book.

How to Create Simple Machines

Creating things using recycled items is a favorite activity of many people.  When seeing empty boxes and long cardboard tubes do you picture the many possibilities?

Ms Scott's class was given the challenge of creating a simple machine using the resources found in the CLIC lab. As the process was happening, Ms Scott recorded the steps using her iPad camera. Students then described what was happening on Ms Scott iPhone. After emailing this, she then printed out a word document.  This became the script for the final video project.

Students' scripts were highlighted for easy reading into the iPad.
What simple machines do you see?

Let's practice before we record.

Northeast Vocabulary

Fourth Graders spend a lot of time studying the regions of the United States.

While studying the northeast region, Ms Scott's Class decided to share their knowledge of new vocabulary.
The first step was to use their text books to identify vocabulary words that were important.  We worked together in the library using the glossary to help us define the words.

Then working collaboratively students wrote their own scripts to creatively teach others about the important words from the chapter.

Using our new green screen, groups filmed their script and chose the background for their scene.

After a little app smashing using Green Screen by Doink and iMovie, here is their final project.
Click on the map below.

For fun click on the picture below for some practice with the states in the northeast region.

"Oh Canada"

Ms Scott's Class have been researching and studying Canada.  Using the app Book Creator, students worked collaboratively and cooperatively in small groups to produce these original books.  Take a tour of Canada with them.
These students would love it if you visted their Kidblog page and left them a comment. You will also find a description of the process from their point of view.
Ms Scott's Class Kidblog

In grade 4, students study the geography and people of the United States today. Students learn geography by addressing standards that emphasize political and physical geography and embed five major concepts: location, place, human interaction with the environment, movement, and regions. In addition, they learn about the geography and people of contemporary Mexico and Canada. Teachers may choose to teach the standards on the geography and social characteristics of the nations in Central America and the Caribbean Islands.

Oh, Canada

"Today in school Ms Scott's 4th grade class went on a skype visit and visited Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.  We had a great Think Tank so we were able to guess after 10 questions where they were.  We learned that in school they don't learn about many places so skype helps them.  We were glad that we could help them learn about Massachusetts."

Where Are You?

"Ms Scott's class in Mystery Skype Action~
Today we went on a trip in the USA but we had to try to find where we were going.  The First clue was that it is west of the Mississippi River and in the Midwest region.  The second clue was the place borders Canada.  It is Minnesota!  Now we tried to find out the town or city.  The next clue was it is northwest of St. Paul and not in a major city.  The county starts with the letter M.  The county is Meeker.  It is a town in Meeker County.  The town is Litchfield!  Now you know where we went today."  Reporter Carissa

Our visit today was to Wagner Elementary School in Litchfield, MN
Thank you to Mrs. Swenson's Fourth Graders for collaborating with us.

Fractions

Adding and Subtracting Unlike Fractions

Grade 4 students in Ms Scott's class have been exploring fractions in Math in Focus Chapter 6.

Students used their text books to explore adding fractions.

Using bar models, students worked on subtracting unlike fractions.

Students worked in small groups to share their knowledge of adding and subtracting unlike fractions using the app, educreations.  Click on the links below to learn more about adding and subtracting fractions.

Common Core Standards~ Grade 4

Number & Operations—Fractions 1

Extend understanding of fraction equivalence and ordering.

1. Explain why a fraction a/b is equivalent to a fraction (n × a)/(n × b) by using visual fraction models, with attention to how the number and size of the parts differ even though the two fractions themselves are the same size. Use this principle to recognize and generate equivalent fractions.

Number & Operations—Fractions 1

Extend understanding of fraction equivalence and ordering.

2. Compare two fractions with different numerators and different denominators, e.g., by creating common denominators or numerators, or by comparing to a benchmark fraction such as 1/2. Recognize that comparisons are valid only when the two fractions refer to the same whole. Record the results of comparisons with symbols >, =, or <, and justify the conclusions, e.g., by using a visual fraction model.

Prime, Composite, and Square Numbers

What happens when you give a group of fourth graders the challenge of teaching others about prime, composite, and square numbers?  Of course they create an educreations presentation!

The students in Ms Scott's class have been studying Factors in Chapter 2 in our new math program, Math in Focus.  They all did a remarkable job explaining these 3 types of numbers.
Click the links below the standard to learn about numbers.
