International Recipe Book

A tradition in Mrs. Boucher's class in the month of December is to gather holiday family favorite recipes and as an added treat this year students from their partner JDO class from Wales also contributed their family recipes.

During a Google Hangout, the idea was discussed with both classes.

Around Thanksgiving, the students are asked to find a favorite recipe when their family is gathered together. They then create a google doc and add a picture of that food. After editing and re-editing, they are then ready to enter their recipe in the shared google slide project.

Hour of Code 2019

 Every December Code.org organizes a week of opportunities for learning how to code that reach tens of millions of students worldwide. Students at both Steward School and Proctor School explore coding opportunities both during library time and in class.

MASSCUE 2019

I had the pleasure and privilege of attending MASSCUE again this year.
And this year Miss Klipfel and I presented as well!

The 2 days were filled with tech everywhere you went. I attended some amazing sessions from other teachers and tech specialists.

The keynote speaker, Tara Martin inspired the audience with her compassion and commitment to making education relevant.

There were a few authors there presenting as well that we had the pleasure of connecting with.

 So many vendors, so much to learn!

Our presentation was on ways to create and integrate choice boards into the curriculum. This was a very enjoyable experience and we certainly made many new connections.

One way that I was able to share all this new knowledge and experience was to host Tech or Treat at both schools. Teachers dropped by for a treat and we were able to talk tech.

3D Augmented Reality

We used the Quiver Apps and let 3D augmented reality take our coloring to the next level. 
Dot Day is celebrated each September 15ish based on a book, The Dot by Peter Reynolds.
Students at Steward School created their mark and we brought these individual dots to life using the app quivervision.

Students in fourth grade are studying earth landforms and features. They discussed volcanoes and using Quiver these volcanoes became 3D. This app also provides a Quiz section while exploring the makeup of the volcano.

You grab the iPad and take pictures.
Then, of course, these lovely bobbleheads are placed in the app chatterpix.

Super Powers

First Grade students have been hard at work on their writing skills.

Using the OREO writing process Mrs. Dunn and Mrs. Kuhn asked their class to write a letter to Captain Marvelous (that's Me) to apply to join the SuperHeroes Team.

We then pulled out the big green screen and using the app DoInk, students shared their superpower. We had a little fun with the flying and under the sea superpowers.

World Read Aloud 2019

Steward School students participated in World Read Aloud Day

Author Lauren Magaziner visited our third-grade students via Skype on January 31st! Lauren read from her newest book Case Closed: Mystery in the Mansion and students had the opportunity to ask her questions about the writing and revision process, being an author, and more. Students ended the Skype session feeling more inspired to read and write!

On Friday, February 1 as part of World Read Aloud Day, the first grade enjoyed a Skype visit with children’s book author Sue Fliess! Sue is the author of over 25 books for children. She read her new book to us  NINJA CAMP and talked to us about being an author. We got to ask her questions too! The kids really enjoyed the visit and we hope to have more interactions like that in the future. Talk about the author visit with your child—it’s a great way to encourage reading and writing in the classroom and at home.  If you’d like to read more about Sue and see her other books, please visit www.suefliess.com.

 Kindergarten students all brought in their Loveys and shared them with author Betsy Devany. She read her book Lucy's Lovey to the students and shared her loveys as well. The students were enthralled with her collection and the names she gave her characters. They especially enjoyed meeting Norman, a giant gorilla. 

Friday ended with a skype visit for second graders with author of the Ballpark Mysteries series, David Kelly. He shared his writing process and his love of baseball and baseball parks.

David also shared the Mystery of the Morse Code hidden on the Green Monster. Look closely at the dots and dashes. The initials of Tom Yawkey and Jean Yawkey appear vertically on the white stripes that separate the columns of the American League scores.
