Polar Animals

Second graders have been reading nonfiction text as they study the polar regions.  After writing a paragraph to describe the most fascinating fact about their polar animal, students used the app drawing pad to illustrate their animal.  When these were done we recorded these facts in the app educreations.  Click on the link below to learn some new interesting facts discovered by Mrs. Madden's class.

On the Hunt For Text Features

Mrs. Lantz's students went on a treasure hunt in the library looking for text features found in nonfiction text.  Each student was assigned one text feature and their assignment was to photograph at least 5 examples of that feature using the camera on the iPad.  The students had a lot of fun with this assignment.

Students were also introduced to the FREE app Pic Collage as a way to display their photos.  Pic Collage allows the user to add text, background, and arrange pictures.  These collages will then become reference tools in the classroom.

All the students' collages are displayed using the FREE app, Animoto.

Happy Valentine's Day Kindergarten Style

Mrs. Ragan's Kindergarten Class has a message for loved ones.

Students have been studying the genre Poetry.  They also created their own Roses Are Red... poems.  As a fun way to share their poetry knowlegde, students created a drawing to match their poems using the app drawing pad.  Sitting with their poems in front of them, students added many details to their creative drawings.  When completed, students saved their art work to the camera roll right from the app drawing pad.

After all the pictures were completed, the next step was to email the pictures to one iPad.  Using the app educreations each student then read his/her poem as we recorded the entire class project.

Happy Valentine's Day

Mystery Skype

We Traveled To Kentucky!

Mrs. Murphy's Class and Mrs. Kelleher's Class went to a school 986 miles from Proctor School.  If we were driving it would have taken approximately 14 hours and 58 minutes to get there according to google maps.  We went there in minutes via Skype.

Fourth Graders participated in a Mystery Skype visit with a class from Lexington, Kentucky.  The thoughtful questions from both sides helped us discover the mystery location of each class.  Students enjoyed playing the 20 questions version of Skype even though we had some technical difficulties with sound.  It is a wonderful sight to watch students problem solving, collaborating and working as a team with a common purpose.  These skills will take these students far in the 21st century.

Girls Love Coding!

Mrs. Boucher's Class has been working their way through the Hour of Code in the school computer lab.
On Friday morning many students had completed the first tutorial session and are now on to more advanced levels.  Some are trying their hand at creating their own pictures and apps.   This is problem solving at a high level.  I can't wait to see what these students can do next.  Perhaps we have some future technology experts in this class.

Uma, the creator of the snowman last week, checks in on Olivia who decided to code Minnie Mouse.
Oh so cute.
Thanks Olivia.

The fifth grade continues to explore the Hour of Code.
Here is a wish for a Happy New Year, Snowman!
The picture on the right hand side was constructed entirely by coding.  You can see the code written on the left hand side.
Very Impressive Work.

Simple Machines

Fourth Graders have been hard at work studying Simple Machines.  Students worked in Kidblog to create a written post about a simple machine.  Check out their posts.  I know they would love a comment.

As a culminating activity students created an educreations project to share their knowledge.
